Mendoza garlic exporters celebrated that Mexico eliminated restrictions that limited trade

Mexico will no longer require fumigation with bromide or phosphide or the application of anti-sprouting agents. In this way, costs are lowered for Mendoza exporters

Mexico eliminated two sanitary barriers that limited international trade of Mendoza garlic to that country. The good news was announced after the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service of that country withdrew two requirements that for years imposed high costs and logistical complications on local exporters.

The Ministry of Production of Mendoza, through the Directorate of Agriculture, together with the Association of Packers and Exporters of Garlic, Onions and Related Products of the Province of Mendoza ProM (Asocamen), announced this news.

Los ajeros mendocinos se entusiasmaron con la resolución de México.

The Mendoza ajeros were enthusiastic about Mexico’s resolution.

Satisfaction of Mendoza’s drivers

“These barriers not only restricted the competitiveness of Mendoza garlic in the Mexican market, but also generated a negative economic impact for the entire production chain,” highlighted Maximiliano Di Cesare, from Asocamen.

From this sector entity they added: “The resolution of these obstacles is the result of a year of efforts led by our institution and supported by collaborative work with provincial organizations – the Directorate of Agriculture – and national organizations – Senasa -.”

“We are the ones who silently keep the gears of activity oiled and turning so that Mendoza’s productive machinery never stops,” he highlighted, adding: “Engineer (Alfredo) Draque, current director of Agriculture of the Province, has opted for the strengthening of intermediate entities as a strategy for efficient and virtuous public-private interaction. Unequivocally, the results are being seen.”

“These types of actions allow markets to open and conditions to improve. We recently held a meeting with different representative chambers of the local productive sector and the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates,” highlighted the aforementioned Draque.

The official explained: “Among the topics discussed, there was talk about the possibility of taking our products to the largest food fair in the world, Gulfood. Although this resolution has been excellent news, we are working together with all sectors having a much broader and more comprehensive vision for our producers.

Key benefits

It is expected that the measure adopted by Mexico will represent greater competitiveness for producers in our country, who will be able to offer their products at better prices.

It will also represent a simplification of processes by streamlining export procedures and reducing times and costs. In addition, the resolution means a strengthening of trade relations, since this measure reaffirms the commitment of both countries to promote commercial exchange.

The elimination of these requirements opens a promising outlook for Mendoza garlic exports. Mexico, as one of the destination markets with the greatest projection for the immediate future, represents a strategic opportunity for local producers. According to Asocamen estimates, this advance will allow exports to increase by 20% over the next year, which will improve the competitiveness of the sector and generate greater income for the province and the country.
